I am growing my own herbs now. First, I got sick of paying high prices for “fresh” herbs in the grocery store and then using a leaf or two and watching the rest wilt. Freezing doesn’t always work, ya know. Also, it’s kinda neat to walk outside your door and snip a leaf or two for your recipe.
I seem to have better luck with growing from seed than buying a plant. And it’s great to watch those first shoots come pushing up from the soil. Some push better than others, lol. I have Tarragon, Sweet Basil, Chives, Cilantro, Oregano and Mint. My Marjoram didn’t come up at all, not one little shoot, but I’m babying one teeny little Lavender sprig like it was my first born! Rosemary grows wild like a weed out here so I just steal it – and sage too.
I even went out and got some tomato plants – Black Krim – they were on sale.Never heard of a Black Krim and may never get to find out what they are because you get what you pay for, they just seem to be sitting there sucking up water and not doing much else. And a lovely friend found a Beefsteak Tomato plant for me!! Yahoo, I love Beefsteaks – it’s kinda sucking up water too, but I have high hopes, lol.
I understand that an added benefit of herbs around your house and garden is they can deter certain pests. I have to check that out a bit more – google herbal pest remedies or something – because I don’t mind getting rid of pests. Do you think Tarragon might get rid of door to door salespeople??
Anyway, I’m very proud of my little herb garden – if someone had told me 20 years ago I’d be into gardening I would have laughed them into a black hole. Times change and we change with ‘em.
